Dr. S. Thangasamy (12-05-1954) an accomplished educationist, commonly known in his pen name as “Kokila Thangasamy” hails from an Agricultural family in “Kokilapuram” village of Cumbum Valley, Theni District and he is the first Ph.Dawardee in Education in his De-notified Community (DNC).

Dr. S. Thangasamy is a prolific and creative writer, a good orator, an inspiring teacher and an efficient team leader committing his whole life to promotion of teaching, learning, research and extension activities from primary education level to higher education level.

Dr. S. Thangasamy is the Professor and Former Director at the Centre for Educational Research established in Madurai Kamaraj University in 2008 with a view to undertaking issue-based educational researches enabling the Govt. of Tamil Nadu to formulate educational policies from primary level to higher education level.

 

Long Experience in Teacher Education (B.Ed / M.Ed programmes)

                     Dr. S. Thangasamy has spent most of his life time in promoting Teacher Education in various capacities. After obtaining his M.A. & M.Ed. Degrees from Madurai Kamaraj University, he joined the Department of Education as a Junior Research Fellow (UGC) in 1981 and he was awarded Ph.D in Eduation in 1986. After working for about 10 years as Assistant Professor of Education at Lakshmi College of Education, Centre for Research Gandhigram he was elevated to the position of a Reader / Associate Professor in Education in 1998 and later he was appointed as Principal of the same college in 2006. Previously, as soon as completing his doctoral research in Madurai Kamaraj University he worked for 2 years (from 1986-1987) as Assistant Editor for Education in the Encyclopedia Centre, Tamil University, Thanjavur established by the former Chief-Minister Dr. M. G. Ramachandran.

Dr. Thangasamy has over 25 years’ teaching experience in B.Ed, M.Ed and M.Phil programmes. He has over 20 years’ research experience in Education. He has served as an effective Teacher Educator – as Assistant Professor, Reader / Associate Professor and Principal for 25 years in the reputed College of Education run by Gandhigram Trust, Gandhigram, Dindigul District.

First Professor of Education in TNOU

During the period 2004-06, he was appointed as the first Professor & Head, School of Education, Tamil Nadu Open University, Chennai and he was associated himself with the Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Open University in starting the B.Ed Degree course for in-service teachers and M.Phil in Education program through Distance Mode at the state level in 2004 during the regime of AIADMK Government.

Dr. S. Thangasamy has acquired a good experience in the University developmental administration by actively participating as Member of Syndicate (Manonmanium Sundaranar University), Member of Senate (Madurai Kamaraj University), Member of Academic Council (Madurai Kamaraj University, & Tamil Nadu Open University), Member of Planning Board (TNOU), Member of Finance Committee (Manonmanium Sundaranar University & Gandhigram Rural Institute) and Member of Board of Studies (Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University).

University Representative: Dr.S. Thangasamy has discharged his managerial and advisory functions in the College Management Boards as University Representative for four different Colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, Manonmanium Sundaranar University & Periyar University.

 

Research Projects, Research Guidance and Research Articles

Dr. S. Thangasamy has been an active researcher in education and completed 5 Research projects, guided 12 scholars for Ph.D degree and 55 students for M.Phil degree. He has published about 50 articles in National / International Journals. In addition, Dr. S. Thangasamy has been appointed as Convener of Ph.D Viva-Voce Board of Examination for several Ph.D candidates in different state universities in Tamil Nadu.

Preparation of study materials and curricular innovation

Dr. S. Thangasamy has contributed to the development of curricular and study materials for B.Ed & M.Phil Programmes of Tamil Nadu Open University, Chennai when he was the first Professor & Head of School of Education of Tamil Nadu Open University during the year of 2004-2006. He has served as Resource Person and prepared study materials for B.Ed Degree course (Distance mode) of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.

Innovative Writer and Author of Educational Books

Dr. Thangasamy is a creative and innovative writer committed to bringing out innovations in Teacher Education with a focus on the areas such as professional development of teachers, effective teaching & learning process, motivating teachers, educational psychology, educational research, and English language teaching. He has authored nearly 40 books and edited 5 monographs on education. His works are:

  • 4 inspiring books for Teachers.

 

  • 7 text-books for B.Ed / M.Ed programmes.
  • One Research Methodology book for M.Phil and Ph.D scholars in education.

 

  • 10 books for developing oral fluency in English among and Learners from LKG to College level students.
  • 5 books for Teaching Tamil language in an innovative way to enable speedier learning of Tamil language by children in primary schools.

 

  • 5 literary books in Tamil.

Award winning book: Dr. S. Thangasamy’s love for students and their learning and teachers are depicted in his innovative book on “Learner-centred Education and Teaching of Tamil” for which the Govt. of Tamil Nadu has given the “Best Book Award” and he was honored by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. O. Pannerselvam with a cash award of Rs.10,000/- in 2002.

Organizer of National & International Seminars

Dr. S. Thangasamy has organized nearly 20 National Seminars for University / College teachers and school teachers from 2002 to 2014. Under his leadership and guidance the Centre for Educational Research organized an International Seminar on “Innovations in Teaching, Research and Management of Higher Education” during 21st and 22nd March 2012. He has been invited by several colleges of Education in the State to deliver keynote address / convocation address / valedictory address from 2007 to 2014.

Special lectures and Invited talks

Dr. S. Thangasamy has delivered several useful special lectures in the UGC-sponsored orientation courses / refresher courses organized by Academic Staff Colleges in Madurai Kamaraj University, Bharathidasan University, Bharathiar University, Gandhigram Rural University &
St. Xaviers’ College of Education, Palayamkottai.

Dr. S. Thangasamy has delivered nearly 55 special lectures and presented 20 papers in the National and International seminars from 2004 to 2014 and he has delivered 20 invited lectures in different universities / colleges from 2006 to 2014.

Member in the Inspection Commission of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bangalore

Dr. S. Thangasamy is a Member of the Inspection Commission of NCTE, Bangalore, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai & Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, Chennai for grant of affiliation to new B.Ed Colleges of Education across the State.

Executive Editor for International Journal

Dr. S. Thangasamy is the Editor of “International Journal of Educational Research, Development and Extension”, the Quarterly International Journal published by the Centre for Educational Research, Madurai Kamaraj University

Awards and Titles

Dr. S. Thangasamy has received the “Best Book Award” for his book Child-centred Education from Thiru O. Panner selvam, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 2002.

In recognition of his contribution to “Learner-centred Education”, Dr. S. Thangasamy has been presented with the prestigious “CB Aditanar Award” in Theni and in recognition of his contribution to in-service training of working teachers, he has been honoured with the title “Kalvi Chelvar” by Karaikudi Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Karaikudi.

  • improving oral fluency in English among rural students in schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu by popularizing his interactive model of
  • Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) through seminars/ workshops / in-service training programmes.

 

  • improving the speedy learning of Tamil language among primary school children by designing innovative reading materials based on his Joyful and Active Learning Methods of Teaching of Language.
